English or Russian? How to begin your studies

Here we explain the peculiarities of studying in a mostly Russian-speaking country

As you may already be aware, Belarus has two official languages - Belarusian and Russian. Due to the USSR heritage and multinational community Russian language is more widely spoken in our country, although the Belarusian language has been showing steady growth in popularity recently. Of course, our universities follow modern trends and offer a variety of English-taught programs, yet some of their highly demanded educational programs are still taught in Russian only. So, if you don't want to miss an opportunity to become a specialist in the field of your interest,  you might want to study Russian first - extra language is always a plus for your future CV.

Of course, Belarusian universities are aware of this challenge, and practically every one of them offers their international students to apply for their Preparatory Department or Russian language courses. For one academic year, international students study the Russian language as well as some of the subjects connected with their future major. Besides, there is a lot of interesting events and trips during these courses, where students learn about Belarusian culture, history, traditions, cuisine, and many more. Theses studies are rather intensive, and teachers have a lot of experience in teaching Russian to foreign students. It is amazing to watch how young people from China, India, Angola, Cameroon, Nigeria, and many other countries progress from speaking no Russian at all to chatting fluently with their Belarusian friends in less than nine months.

The cost of the Russian language courses differs in every university but totals $1600 on average. At the end of their studies, all students pass exams which allow them to apply for a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Russian. They receive a special certificate that can be accepted by every Belarusian university, so you can study the language at one educational institution and apply for your degree to another one.
