SIM-card and currency exchange - no overpayments directly at the airport

If you're a frequent traveller, you probably know the unwritten rule: never buy a SIM-card or change currency at the airport - it's supposedly more expensive than in the city. But here's the good news: in Belarus this rule does not work. Here - everything is different.

SIM-card right on arrival? Convenient and at the same price

Unlike many other countries, in Belarus you will not overpay for mobile communication, even if you activate a SIM-card right at the airport. Tariffs of mobile operators are fixed throughout the country - it does not matter whether you buy a SIM-card in the centre of Minsk or right after your arrival.

This is especially handy if:

  • need to call a taxi through the app right away (instead of catching one at the exit and wondering how much they'll ask),
  • want to text your family that everything's okay,
  • plot a route to the hotel or the university.

And you don't have to search for Wi-Fi or rely on a free network that works every now and then.

Where do you get a SIM-card?

In the arrivals area of Minsk National Airport there are several points of sale of SIM-cards of Belarusian operators. For example, on the ground floor in sector 3-4 you will find a sales point of mobile provider life:), where you will be helped to choose the right tariff, install a SIM-card or even connect an eSIM. Convenient, quick, no queues and with a smile.

What mobile operators are there in Belarus?

There are three operators in the country:

life:)— Often chosen by tourists and students, affordable tariffs, can be connected directly at the airport;

A1 — wide range of packages, good coverage;

МТС — is known for its stable connection, especially in the regions.

All offer starter packages with internet, minutes and minimal formalities. Here are the approximate conditions (for June 2025):

 life:)Like home 100 GB high speed, further — unlimited 2 Mbps 700 minfrom 25 BYN
МТС#BezlimitisheUnlimited700 minfrom 40 BYN
А1Drive Tourist Unlimited700 minfrom 40 BYN

   a telecoms retailer may charge additional fees for providing services such as setting up the internet, SIM card installation, etc.

> All you need is a passport and 5 minutes of time.

Currency exchange - no surprises either

As for currency exchange, it's simple. In Belarus, exchange offices belong to banks, and they have fixed rates, which depend not on location, but on the policy of a particular bank. That is, the difference between the exchange rate at the airport and, say, in the centre of Minsk is essentially zero.

At the airport you will find branches of major banks such as:

  • Belarusbank
  • BPS-Sberbank
  • RRB Bank

Their rates can be viewed online in advance to compare and choose the best one.

Belarus - in favour of comfort from the first minutes

There is no need to put off important little things for later. In Belarus, everything is well thought out: you can be in touch at once, have the right currency on hand at once - and start your trip with confidence, not with running around.

So if you've just arrived, feel free to stop by the nearest mobile phone operator's counter and exchange office. It's all working. It's clear. It's fair.
