New specialties in Belarusian universities to replace those that are no longer relevant

Minister of Education Andrei Ivanets talked about significant changes in the system of higher education in Belarus. This year, the country's universities will stop enrollment in more than 50 non-core specialties, while at the same time opening new directions focused on modern technologies and relevant industries.

The Minister said that this decision is aimed at optimizing the educational system and focusing resources on the most in-demand and relevant specialties. This will improve the quality of education and compliance of graduates with the needs of the modern labour market.

New specialties: a glimpse into the future

The specialty Intelligent Electronics at the Belarusian State University will be one of the innovations. Graduates will be able to work in the dynamically developing fields of micro- and nanoelectronics, as well as in the field of artificial intelligence technologies.

The Belarusian State University of Food and Chemical Technologies in Mogilev will introduce a specialty Food Safety. The education will last four years, an extramural form of education in this specialty is not envisaged, graduates will be awarded the Engineer qualification  upon graduation. The admission plan for this year is 20 budgetary places. To enter, applicants need to pass three centralized tests: in Russian or Belarusian language, chemistry and biology.

Mogilev State University will be enriched with a new specialty Physical and Military-Patriotic Education, which emphasizes the importance of patriotic education of youth in modern society.

Earlier it was also announced about the appearance of such specialties as African Studies in BSU, Ultra-high Frequency Systems in BSUIR, Design and Technology of Unmanned Aircraft Complexes and Chemical Technology of Energy-rich Materials and Products in BGTU.

Changes in the enrollment process

In addition to the introduction of new specialties, the very process of entering universities will be changed. Applicants will be able to remotely join the application queue, choosing three universities, one of which will be a priority. If an applicant wants to change his or her wishes during the process, it will also be possible to do so online via the Electronic Queue Service (under development).
